ERBARIO 900
Prima ancora di essere una mostra, Erbario 900 è una chiara dichiarazione d'intenti nel ripensare anacronisticamente il secolo XX come un luogo dove convivono ancora erbe che crescono e si intrufolano nel nostro presente come le radici che rigonfiano gli asfalti e le carreggiate delle strade di campagna.

La raccolta di queste erbe si intreccia in modo invisibile ma concreto con la biografia di Mario Lupano, storico e critico dell'architettura, che, nato nel Monferrato, ha vissuto tra il Piemonte, Firenze, Reggio Calabria, Bologna fino ad approdare a Venezia. In tutti i suoi spostamenti e le sue ricerche Lupano ha raccolto tracce ed immagini in un corpus che rivela tanto del suo istinto rabdomantico quanto dell'esigenza poetica di rifiutare la nozione per abbracciare una felice narrazione del secolo scorso che destabilizzi l'orientamento. Del resto, la Storia è una forma che non può che essere raccontata, e quindi tradotta, trasformata, liquefatta per annaffiare il nostro tempo.



Mario Lupano si definisce come mentore indipendente, nonché bibliofilo, collezionista di immagini, iconofilo e iconauta. Senza ormeggiarsi in sicuri porti semiotici o di teoria delle immagini, ama, come tutti gli artisti, l’ambiguità delle tracce visive e la ricchezza che da essa si genera. Ha dedicato studi soprattutto alla situazione italiana nella prima metà del Novecento, approfondendo le relazioni tra modernismo, architettura, fascismo e dopoguerra del boom economico.

Storico e critico dell’architettura contemporanea, è stato professore ordinario all’Università Iuav di Venezia, dove ha curato le attività culturali ed espositive della Biblioteca di Ateneo, ed è stato Direttore della didattica. Nello stesso Ateneo ha insegnato nei corsi di laurea in arti visive, teatro e arti performative, design della moda, continuando la sua pratica di formare persone multi- e trans-disciplinari. Indaga la circolarità tra procedure progettuali, artistiche, curatoriali; e ha contribuito all'invenzione di nuovi percorsi formativi e di ricerca all’Università. Ha curato mostre, intese come discorso critico-spaziale e dispositivo visionario, e ha sviluppato progetti editoriali in cui si indagano le potenzialità del display, del montaggio e del morphing.

HERBARIUM 900
Even before being an exhibition, Herbarium 900 is a clear statement of rethinking the 20th century anachronistically and imagining a place where different herbs still coexist, growing and intruding into our present like the roots that bulge the asphalts and roadways of country roads. The harvest of these grasses is intertwined in an invisible but tangible way with the biography of Mario Lupano, an architectural historian and critic, who, born in Monferrato, lived between Piedmont, Florence, Reggio Calabria, and Bologna until he landed in Venice. In all his travels and research Lupano has collected traces and images in a corpus that reveals as much of his dowsing instinct as of the poetic need to reject notion in order to embrace a happy narrative of the last century that destabilizes orientation. After all, History is a form that can only be told, and therefore translated, transformed, and liquefied so to soak our times.

Mario Lupano defines himself as an independent mentor, as well as a bibliophile, image collector, iconophile and iconologist. Without mooring himself in the safe harbors of semiotics or of image theory, he loves, like all artists, the ambiguity of visual cues and the richness that is generated from it. He has devoted studies mainly to the Italian situation in the first half of the twentieth century, delving into the relations between modernism, architecture, fascism and the postwar economic boom. As historian and critic of contemporary architecture, he was a Full Professor at Università Iuav di Venezia, where he curated the cultural and exhibition activities of the university library, and was appointed as director of education. In the same athenaeum he taught in the degree courses in visual arts, theater and performing arts, and fashion design, continuing his practice of training multi- and trans-disciplinary people. He investigates the inter-circle between design, artistic, curatorial procedures; and has contributed to the invention of new educational and research paths at the University. He has curated exhibitions, understood as critical-spatial discourse and as a visionary devices, developed publishing projects investigating the potential of display, of montage, and morphing.
